Intent
Horticulture is a new subject which was launched in September 2022. As the garden area is developed the scope for practical elements will be incorporated into the course.
Horticulture has something to offer every student. Pupils will acquire the practical skills to plant and care for plants. Broad beans, Winter Pea, Tomatoes, Sweetcorn, Salads, and a variety of Herbs are all just some examples of crops that students will be able to plant and have the option of taking home some of the harvested produce.
Students will also learn the types of weekly maintenance needed in the garden area and learn how to use everyday garden tools in a safe and independent manner. Until the garden area is developed the focus will be mainly on class based learning.
The teaching and practical activities will seek to engage and challenge students of all abilities and all aspirations.
Students will also learn about wider issues related to Horticulture such as conservation and the countryside.
Implementation
Lessons are 55 minutes and are planned to enable a balance between a student’s practical work, teacher demonstrations and time for pupils to reflect on their practice.
We want students to develop practical skills including being able to grow plants from seed and being able to nurture the plants through providing the correct level of nutrients and water.
Trips will be arranged for pupils to be able to appreciate Horticulture in the outside world. Each year it is intended that there will be a trip to Kew Gardens and also to a local garden centre.
Impact
It is intended that students will take the skills and knowledge they have acquired and then be able to transfer these to their practical life, both as a young person and young adults and develop a interest in growing plants in a variety of open and indoor spaces.
At the forefront as an objective is to allow children to enjoy the open green space in order to improve their confidence and mental well being.
YR11 results
This is a non examinable subject but it is intended that as the gardening facilities improve in the school, that we will be able to offer AQA Pre Entry Level Unit Awards
