Bringing World War Two history to life at Duxford

Students from Erkenwald Campus recently visited the Imperial War Museum Duxford as part of their KS3 History studies on the Second World War. The trip gave students the chance to step beyond the classroom and experience history in a real and memorable way.

Visiting an actual Battle of Britain air base helped students develop a much deeper understanding of wartime Britain and the role aviation played during the conflict. Standing beside real Spitfires and exploring the historic hangars brought the topic to life, sparking thoughtful discussions about what life may have been like for pilots and civilians during the war.

One student reflected: ‘In class you just look at pictures, but seeing the real planes in the hangars made me realise how brave those young pilots actually had to be.’

The visit was both engaging and inspiring, helping students connect emotionally with the history they have been studying while strengthening their understanding of key events from World War Two.
