Designing a way to make Maths more relevant
Making Maths relevant to the real world can be a challenge but one that Suresh Singh, Mayesbrook’s Curriculum Lead for the subject, has risen to through his work with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
Collaborating with the RIBA, Surinder Panesar and the BDSIP-facilitated Maths Hub, and social enterprise the POoR Collective in 2021, and through the Design Future London Challenge, the school has offered students the chance to learn about Maths through architectural design and apply their mathematical knowledge and creativity to create their own design solutions. One result of these collaborations, ‘Bringing Home the Unknown’, a colourful canopied outdoor seating space, is now a permanent fixture in Mayesbrook’s grounds
In addition to boosting students’ mathematical and creative abilities, these activities have also given them the opportunity to practice working collaboratively, develop resilience and problem-solving skills, give presentations ,and identify routes into careers in the built environment and creative industries.
