Students learn about architecture past-a and present
Spaghetti and marshmallows may seem odd building materials but not for the Mayesbrook Park students who enjoyed a visit to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in central London in early July.
After a guided tour of the wonderful Art Deco building from RIBA’s Learning Manager and architect Joshua Brooks, the Years 7, 8 and 9 students made sketches, learned about what architects do and then built their own structures.
“We made ours with spaghetti and marshmallows, and I learned that structures are like a skeleton,” said Sophia, Year 7, while Bobbi, Year 9, said it was difficult to do but a lot of fun, and most of the children said they would love to come again.
Further half-termly visits are planned as part of RIBA’s Architecture Ambassadors programme which links professional architects with schools to inspire young people to explore the built environment, learn new skills and consider careers in the field.
