Blasting off with rockets
On Friday 10 January 2025, KS3 students from Mayesbrook Park’s Positive Returns group took part in a unique Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA) trip to Lambourne End in Essex. Unlike typical OAA sessions, this time the focus was on rockets—an exciting mix of creativity, science, and hands-on learning.
Although OAA trips happen regularly, this was the first time in ten years that rockets had been chosen as an activity. It turned out to be a fantastic experience, with students using their problem-solving skills and scientific knowledge to design and launch their own rockets using hydro pumps. The activity not only introduced elements of physics but also encouraged teamwork and innovation in a fun outdoor setting.
Kamran, one of the students, shared his excitement: ‘Obviously, this was the best because I won twice! This was different, and I really enjoyed it because sometimes I don’t like the proper outdoors stuff, but because this wasn’t a real muddy one, I got to showcase more of the physics side of sport and how to create a rocket using a hydro pump. This was an impressive activity.’
The trip was a perfect blend of fun and learning, allowing students to explore science in a new way while enjoying the outdoors. It demonstrated how Outdoor and Adventurous Activities can be much more than traditional outdoor challenges, offering engaging opportunities for personal growth and skill development.
