Uncovering history on the Jack the Ripper tour
On Friday 26th September 2025, students from Mayesbrook Park School took part in an insightful walking tour around Aldgate East and Whitechapel, exploring one of London’s most intriguing and infamous historical cases - Jack the Ripper.
The visit formed an important part of the GCSE History unit ‘Whitechapel, c1870–c1900: Crime, Policing and the Inner City.’ Led by an expert guide, Jeremy, students learned about the living and working conditions in 19th-century Whitechapel, the experiences of the five victims, and how the police investigated the crimes at the time. Students also visited several of the key locations linked to the events, gaining a vivid understanding of how poverty and policing shaped life in Victorian London.
Princess (Year 10) reflected: ‘The tour guide Jeremy was very enthusiastic. He had so much knowledge about Jack the Ripper. We learnt a lot about the five victims and their lives before they were murdered. I saw parts of London that really interested me and that I had never seen before.
Kai (Year 11) added: ‘The Jack the Ripper tour was entertaining. Jeremy gave us cool tasks and we managed to get some great photos.’
This trip helped students deepen their understanding of historical context while also building their curiosity, critical thinking, and teamwork skills , all of which are key elements of successful learning at Mayesbrook.
